Edible Delmarva: Fall 2020

While our region may be defined by geography (a nod to the three states that comprise our name) and landscape (beautifully bordered by the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, the Atlantic Beaches, and the Brandywine Valley), it is our people that define who and what we are.

As we navigate a year marked by a global pandemic, social unrest, economic crises, and uncertainty in every area of our lives — it is the people in our lives who are getting us through. The ones we love, the ones we live and work with, the ones who inspire and encourage, and the ones we may never see who put food on our table and care for our communities and just keep the world turning.

As summer slides into fall, there is a comfort in knowing we are in this together. That everyone is struggling to make ends meet and grappling with an unknown future; that all of us miss handshakes and hugs and eating out and gathering to celebrate milestones with our friends and families.

Yes, there is comfort to be found. In simplifying how we spend our time, like Salibury’s Eva Whipple who has found clarity and peace by focusing on her family, her homestead and her local yoga studio. In learning something new, like Robbie Raffish Tarpley who headed to her kitchen with a cookbook and found a new creative outlet. In dreaming up comfort food we didn’t even know we needed, like Lee Mikles and Jim O’Donoghue and the kitchen magicians at Grain, Bill and Jessica Wallen.

Even in the midst of what will forever be known as an “unprecedented year”, there is comfort to be found and abundance to be harvested and gratitude to be shared. As we continue to navigate this year together, we are grateful to be here in Delmarva with all of you.
