Edible Delmarva: Holiday/Winter 2019
As the seasons take another turn, our thoughts turn to celebrating the winter holidays and the dawning of the new year. Across Delmarva, the rhythm of the new season is evident. The excitement of the start of the holiday season pairs with the winding down of the harvest and the preparations for winter’s rest. There are plans to make for holiday gifting and visiting, goals to set for the year ahead, gratitude to express for the year gone by, and dreams to move one step closer to fruition.
In this issue, we do the same, with a renewed appreciation for the people, places and programs that make up our incredible Delmarva community. We are inspired by those who are following their passion, like Daniel and Kathleen Moss from Fox Briar Farm, who are showing us what micro-scale market gardening looks like, and the Pallares family in Chestertown, who are fulfilling their dreams of a local vineyard and wine house to share their love of good wine and good food. There’s Emily Chandler, who turned an early love of all things Italian into a bustling market in Easton, and two unstoppable women, Peggy Raley-Ward and Catherine Hester, who followed their dreams and changed what it means to be in the wine business. In every corner of Delmarva there are people like Robert Camper, a lifelong resident who hunts and grows most of what goes on his table.
The coming of shorter days and longer nights also means more time for gathering with friends and family, and more time for sharing food and drink. This is a wonderful time to get out and experience some of our local gems. Like the new cocktail lounge Torbert Street Social in Wilmington known for its speakeasy atmosphere, killer cocktails, and shareable menu. And don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Middle Eastern flavors in Newark, getting to know these mouth-watering menus is well worth it.
As we reflect on the past year, we want to express our profound appreciation for all the storytellers, farmers, chefs, artisans and food-and-drink lovers who have helped us celebrate what is so special about our region. As we grew to five season issues this year, we loved being able to tell even more stories about the people across Delaware and Eastern Shore Maryland and Virginia. We are also deeply grateful for all the support from advertisers, institutions, coalitions, advocates and associations who have partnered with us to make sure we can continue to tell the stories of Delmarva. And we would be nothing without our readers, who share their feedback, suggest ideas, inspire us to reach further, and who keep coming back for more!
So as we bring one year to a close and begin another, my co-publisher Anne Monti and I wish you a joyful winter season, with time to reflect, to celebrate, and to share. Time to savor the season and its comfort foods. Time to curl up and read the afternoon away. Time to dream about the promise of spring. Time to gather together with those you love. Time to appreciate all the gifts in your life, whatever they may be!
