Edible Delmarva: Summer 2022
There is always delight in the coming of warm weather, being outdoors, gathering with friends and family, and all the simple joys summer brings. It was a long winter and chilly spring, so the sun feels particularly revitalizing and the warm rain (and there has been rain!) nourishing. We’re even looking forward to welcoming the growing population of our beach and bay communities once again.
Our contributors always inspire us to explore tucked-away Delmarva treasures, try new tastes on the plate or in the glass, and take small steps to improve ourselves and our world. In this issue, we celebrate the simple abundance that is such a vital part of summer on Delmarva.
Nothing says summer more than homemade ice cream, and the creamy servings from Lockbriar & Daughter are some of the best in the region. Writer Tim Vetter takes us to meet Jacqueline Lockwood and see what inspires her delicious concoctions that are making a buzz on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
At Heirloom restaurant in Lewes, Delaware, keeping it simple means finding the best local seasonal ingredients and letting them shine on each and every plate. This year, owner Meghan Lee is taking a that approach in the kitchen as well, with seven young chefs taking the lead and honing their creative and culinary skills.
Choosing a wine or spirit can be intimidating, whether you’ve walked into a wine shop or have been handed a wine menu at dinner. Thank goodness there are shop-owners like Derrick Kelley and Riley Quinn at Bin 66, who love match-making customers and wine (and whiskey, a special passion) as much as they love stocking their store in Rehoboth Beach. And thank goodness for Sam Anderson, of Ouro Wines, who fell in love with everything about natural wines, from the taste to the farming methods to production, and is on a mission to expand our wine palates (and we think it’s working!)
There are so many simple pleasures right here in our back yard and we hope you’ll be inspired to visit a county fair, harvest cherries and make clafoutis, dine your way through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal region, plant a native garden, or try a natural wine or sipping whiskey. And be sure to visit the local places and small businesses that make our community special. Each one contributes to the vitality we love, and it is truly a privilege for us to share their stories.
